Dear students/anyone reading this material, I am going to show how to prepare smart notes! There are many types of notes or techniques of note preparation; the next common 4 types of notes are among them. I have briefly summarized with examples; read each of them carefully and use them! 1. Note Summary

1.1. Brief Description 
  • Characteristics: personal short note
    • Note summary is personal short note which is commonly used by many students.
    • Key points are organized and presented by taking key words/phrases and listing them vertically.
    • Others may or may not understand except the writer.
    • It is shorter than prose summary.
  • Formation
    • Listing vertically: note summary is formed by taking key words/phrases from each key point and listing them vertically.
    • Abbreviations: the writer could use common abbreviations/ symbols or he/she could use his/her own abbreviations/symbols.
    • Bulletin: You could use 'bulletin' (listing key points vertically according to their levels)!
    • Time: You could make and use note summary while studying, after studying and before studying!

  • Uses
    • Any subject...: Note summary can be used for any subject, any content, any student... 
    • Condense long note: It could be used to condense/summarize long notes/pages of notes into very short note. For example, summarizing 10 pages note into a half or one page note.
    • Anywhere/time: You can use your note summary anywhere and any time. For example, you can take it in pocket and study it even while going to school/home...
    • Deep understanding: Note summary could be one of the best ways to get deep understanding of subject matter contents.

A. Afan Oromo Version: 'Note summary'
Kabajamtoota barattoota, 'note summary'n nootii gabaabdu, yeroo qo'annaa, qabxiilee ijoo ta'an xalayaarratti barreessanii (gabaajeen, mallattoon, jechaan, gaaleen...) qabachuuti! 
  • Gadii tarreessuun ('bulletin): qabxiilee ijoo ta'an gadii tarreessuun barreessuu.
  • 'Note summary'n nootii dhunfaan qopheeffannu waan taateef, 'note' abbaa qopheesse qofaaf dubbiifamtu ta'uu ni dandeessi!
  • 'Note summary'n tooftaalee qabiiyyee barnootaa tokko gadii fageenyaan hubachuuf gargaaran keessaa isa tokko.
  • Kabajamoo barattoota, haala kanaan yoo qu'attan, mata duree qu'attan san akka oduu duriitti qabattanii, akka oduu duriittii afaaniin himuu dandeessan; yoomiyuu hin irraanfattan!
  • Fakkeenya 'application' jalatti dhihaate ilaali (armaan olitti dhihaateera). 
B. Amharic Version: 'Note summary'
'Note summary' ተማሪዎች ሲያጠኑ ቁልፍ ነጥቦችን በቃል ወይም በ'phrase' ወረቀት ላይ እየፃፉ የሚያጠኑበት አጭር የግል ኖት (personal short note) ነው! 
  • የተለያዩ ጭረቶችን (bulletin) ተጠቅሞ፣ ዋና ነጥቦችን ና ንዕሱ ነጥቦችን በተለያዩ ደረጃዎች 'vertically' ማስቀመጥ ነው። 
  • ውድ ተማሪዎች ይሄን 'Note summary' ተጠቅማች ስታጠኑም (while studying)፣ ካጠናችሁ በኋል ና ሌላ ርዕስ ከመጀመራችሁ በፊት 'reflection' አድርጉ! እያንዳንዷን ነጥብ አብራሯት (self-explanations) ወይም 'revise/summarize' አድርጓቸው!
  • ውድ ተማሪዎች በዚህመልኩ (ከላይ በተጠቀሰው መንገድ) ብታጠኑ፣ ያጠናችሁትን ነገር 'digest' አድርጋችሁ፣ እንደ ተረት ተረት በቃላችሁ ይዛችሁ፣ ማውራት ትችላላችሁ! መቼም አትረሷቸውም!

2. Mind Mapping

2.1. Brief Description of Mind Mapping (as Note Making Techniques/Types)
  • Characteristic: hierarchical and visual note
    • Mind mapping is type of note/note making techniques in which key points are organized and presented visually in hierarchical forms/diagrammatically. 
    • Mind mapping presents one main idea as the central point of the diagram. 
  • Formation
    • Branching out: Mind mapping is formed by taking key words/phrases from each key point and branching out/factorizing them hierarchically.
    • Abbreviations: the writer could use common abbreviations/ symbols or he/she could use his/her own abbreviations/symbols.
    • Types of Mind mapping: There are many types of mind mappings; the followings are some of them.


  • Uses
    • Any subject...: Mind mapping can be used for any subject, any student...
    • Hierarchical contents: Mind mapping is best for subject or content that has hierarchical (different levels) topic and sub-topics.
    • Create mental pictures: It is very powerful type of note making that can create concrete pictures in readers' mind.

3.1. Brief Description of Prose Summary
  • Characteristic: Complete sentence or paragraph
    • Prose summary is type of note in which key ideas/points are organized and presented in complete sentence or paragraph
    • Longer than note summary: it presents detail points in complete sentence or paragraph. 
    • Good example for this is class note which is given by teachers.
  • Formation
    • Paragraph form: key ideas/points could be organized and presented in paragraph form with topic sentence and supportive sentences/details.
    • Complete sentence: Key ideas/points could be organized and presented by listing them vertically using complete sentence/clauses or even phrases... 
  • Uses
    • Any subject...: Prose summary can be used for any subject, any content, any student... 
    • Classroom and books: It is best for classroom notes and also notes from different books.

4.1. Brief Description of Smart Tables
  • Table as note making strategy is old method of note making but still it is very powerful if carefully prepared. 
  • Table, as type of note /note making techniques, we can summarize list of key points in different columns and rows.
