Section-I: English Version of Techniques
Here, I am going to show two smart exam techniques that enable students to answer any question about adverbial clauses:
- Blank space techniques
- Relationship techniques
Question about adverbial clauses could be answered by using blank space or relationship techniques or using both together!
1. Brief Description of Each Techniques
1.1. Blank Space Techniques
Definition: Blank space technique is process of looking for words/ideas before or after the given blank space; using them as clue, eliminate all unrelated choices!
Advantages of Blank space technique
- Blank space technique is general exam technique that could work not only for adverbial clauses questions it could also work for other English topics!
- Blank space technique could be used for any other subjects and by any student!
- Please, read it carefully and use it smartly!
2 steps
There are two simple steps to be followed to use 'blank space techniques':
- Taking the given blank space as a clue: Take the given blank space, and check the words/ideas "before" and "after" the given blank space.
- Elimination: The second step is eliminating all unrelated choices: go to choices, and eliminate all unrelated choices that don't go with the ideas/words "before" or "after" the given blank space.
1.2. Relationship Techniques
In addition to blank space techniques, questions about adverbial clauses could be answered by using 'relationship techniques'!
Definition: Relationship technique/Relationship + elimination technique is the process of reading each of the given ideas; seeing their 'relationship'; then, eliminate all wrong choices based on clues!
Advantages of Relationship technique
- Just like 'blank space technique', relationship technique is general exam technique that could work not only for adverbial clauses questions it could also work for other English topics!
- Relationship technique could be used for any other subjects and by any student!
- Please, read it carefully and use it smartly!
2 steps
There are two simple steps to apply 'relationship techniques': understanding the "relationship" between the given ideas and then, eliminating unrelated choices!
- Understanding "relationship": Whenever you are asked questions about adverbial clauses or other transitional words, look carefully the relationship between the given ideas!
- Do they have 'cause' and 'effect' relationship?
- Do they have 'contrasting' relationship?
- Eliminating: based on the given relationship, take each choice; cross-check with the given context/relationship; then, eliminate wrong choices!
2. Application of the Techniques
Let me give the next explanations to show you how to apply the techniques based on Grade 12 Entrance Exam Questions!
Q. Muktar went to Jimma ______ see his old friends. (G-12: 2014)
A. for B. because
C. as so D. in order to
Brief Explanation-1
Let us see (in explanations-1&2) how to apply blank space techniques and answer adverbial clause questions in one or two simple steps but 100% sure!
- Look the above blank space is followed by verb 'see' (see above).
- Look again the given choices.
- Now, cross-check the given blank space with the given choices and then eliminate unrelated choices.
For example, among the given choices, only choice D ('in order to': purpose clause) could be followed by 'verb1': the rest choices can't be followed by 'verb1' (as used after the given blank space).
So, all the choices should be eliminated using the given blank space as a clue.
Ans. D
Additional/Detail Explanation
See 'Power of Elimination Techniques!
The above blank space is followed by verb1 (see).
Based on this choices A-C are wrong; they must be eliminated:
A. for: 'For' could be used to talk about purpose clause but it must be followed by noun/phrase, not verb1.- The above blank space is followed by verb1; so,
choice A must be eliminated. - When one choice is eliminated, your probability of getting increases from 25-33%!
B. because: 'Because' is reason expression, not purpose expression.- The question is not about reason clause (clue: it talks about future reason); thus,
choice B must be eliminated. - When two choices are eliminated, your probability of getting increases from 33-50%!
C. so as: 'So as' could be used to talk about purpose clause but it must be followed by 'to' (so as to).- The above blank space is not followed by 'to'; so,
choice C must be eliminated. - When three choices are eliminated, your probability of getting increases from 50-100%!
- 100% sure on D: we are 100% sure that choices A, B and C are wrong/eliminated!
- If we are 100% sure that 3 choices are wrong, we can be 100% sure that the rest choice is correct answer!
- 100% sure, the answer is D!
Q. We must work hard ______ to extricate our country from poverty. (G-12: 2010: Entrance)
A. because B. such thatC. so that D. in order
Brief Explanation-2
This question could be answered in one step, using blank space as clue (blank space + elimination techniques).
Look the given blank space is followed by 'to'! Again, look the given choices and then eliminate all the choices that can't be used before 'to'.
Except choice D (in order), none of the given choices is used before 'to' or preceded by 'to': eliminate all except D.
Ans. D
Additional/Detail Explanation
See 'Power of Elimination Techniques!
The above blank space is followed by 'to'.
Based on this, choices A, B and C are wrong; they should be eliminated!
A. because: Grammatically wrong; 'because' can't be followed by 'to'.Choice A must be eliminated.- When one choice is eliminated, your probability of getting increases from 25-33%!
B. such that: Grammatically wrong; 'such that' can't be followed by 'to'.Choice B must be eliminated.- When two choices are eliminated, your probability of getting increases from 33-50%!
C. so that: Grammatically wrong; 'so that' can't be followed by 'to'.Choice C must be eliminated.- When three choices are eliminated, your probability of getting increases from 50-100%
- 100% sure, choice D is correct answer!
Ans. D
Brief Rules-1: Purpose Clauses
- The above two questions are, generally, about "purpose clauses", specifically, about use of 'to + verb1' and 'in order to + verb1' (clues: see explanations 1&2, above)!
- See summary of about "purpose clauses", next!

Q. _________ my car had run out of petrol, I had to park it on the side road and go on foot. (G-12: Entrance: 2015: Social)
A. Despite B. BecauseC. Even though D. In spite of
Brief Explanation-3
This question could also be answered using 'blank space techniques'!
- Since the blank space is followed by clause (clue: subject 'car' + verb 'had'), compare only choices B and C; choices A and D must be eliminated because the blank space is not followed by phrase.
- The question is about cause and effect: 'running out of petrol' and 'going on foot'. Choice C should be eliminated (clue: 'Even though' + dependent clause is used for contrasting ideas, not cause and effect.).
Ans. B
Additional Explanation
The above question deals with 'cause' and 'effect'; the blank space is followed by clause of cause (clue: see explanation-3, above).
Based on these, choices A, C and D are wrong; they should be eliminated!
A. Despite and D. In spite of: the blank space is followed by clause but 'despite' and 'in spite of'.Eliminate both choices A and D!- Your probability of getting increase from 25-50%!
C. Even though: 'Even though' is used for contrasting clauses, not for 'cause' and 'effect'.Eliminate choices C!- Your probability of getting increase from 50-100%!
Brief Rules: Reason Clause (because...)
- The above question is, generally, about 'reason clauses', specifically, about the use of 'because' (clue: see explanation-3)!
- Based on rules about 'reason clauses', 'because' and other related expressions are followed by 'clause of cause'!
For additional, click here!
Q. I don’t choose teaching as my profession, ______ I know teachers have long vacation. (G-12: 2010: Entrance)
A. and B. but C. therefore D. so
Explanation-4
Let's see how to answer the above and other related questions using 'relationship techniques': understanding the relationship between the given ideas; then, eliminating unrelated choices!
This question is about adverbial clauses (clues: see the choice).
- As soon as you prove that the given question is about adverbial clauses, look the relationship between the given ideas.
- Look the relationship between the given ideas (before and after the given blank space).
- They "contrast" to each other: they have "contradiction".
- The speaker knows that teachers have long vacation; he/she doesn't choose the profession (teaching).
- Based on this (contrasting ideas), now, see the given choices and then, eliminate all the choices that are not used to join "contrasting ideas".
- So,
all the given choices should be eliminatedexcept B.
Ans. B
Additional Explanation
See 'Power of Elimination Techniques!
In the above question, based on the relationship between ideas ('contrasting'), choices A, C and D are wrong; they must be eliminated!
A. and: 'And' is used for addition, not for 'contrasting ideas'.Eliminate choice A!- Now, your probability of getting increased from 25% to 33%!
C. therefore: 'Therefore' is used for 'cause' effect', not for 'contrasting ideas'.Eliminate choice C!- Now, your probability of getting increase from 33% to 50%!
D. so: 'So' is used for 'cause' effect', not for 'contrasting ideas'.Eliminate choice D!- Now (after eliminating 3 choices: A, C & D), your probability of getting increased from 50% to 100%!
Ans. B
Brief Rules: Contrasting Clauses
- The above question is, generally, about "contrasting clauses", specifically, about the uses of but!
- Based on rules about "contrasting clauses", 'but' and related expressions are followed by clause (independent clause)!
For additional, click here!
Q. We didn't like the talk show, _____ we switched to the movie channel. (G-12: Entrance: 2014N)
A. as B. because C. so as D. so
Brief Explanation-5
The above question could be answered by applying both 'relationship techniques' and 'blank space techniques'.
- Look the ideas in the above question; they have 'cause' and 'effect' relationship (clues: look the first idea is the 'cause': "We didn't like the talk show", and the second is 'effect': "we switched to the movie channel").
- Look the given choices; choice C must be eliminated because it is ungrammatical ("so as" is used with "to") but the rest 3 choices contain both "reason clause" expressions (A&B) and also "result clause" expression (D).
Take Care! Additional Explanation
Dear students, very careful when the given ideas have 'cause' and 'effect' relationship, and also the given choices contain both "reason clause" and "result clause" expressions!
- Because 'cause' and 'effect' could be expressed by both "reason clause" and also "result clause".
- To answer this and other related questions, use 'blank space techniques'!
Look the idea after/before the given blank space.
- If it is blank space + reason/cause, the question is about reason clause, eliminate result clause expression!
- If it is blank space + result/effect, the question is about result clause, eliminate reason clause expression!
Now, look the above question; the blank space is followed by result/effect (clue: "switching to movie channel". Based on this, all the given choices should be eliminated except D.
Ans. D
Brief Rules: Result Clauses
- The above question is, generally, about "result clauses", specifically, about the uses of 'so'!
- Based on rules about "result clauses", 'so' and related expressions are followed by clause of effect!
